Hello Everybody, Am I the only one who did not hear the tin can band I believe it did not go up Carter avenue or Northampton road, but since I was a lad it always went up these roads it must have happened because I've seen the photos on Broughton web all the best for the new year and hello to anyone who knows me. Comment To all in the village who know and remember Alma Eaton,
Dear all, this is Steve Eaton,

I send this message from Glenmore Park in the Western Suburbs of Sydney (Australia).   It is a sad day for me personally as I advise you that my Nan Alma Eaton (who used to live at 30 Carter Avenue) passed away this day Friday 23rd November aged 87 here in Australia.

It has been a difficult day for us all obviously including my dad, Andy and my uncle Dave following the loss of their loving mother, it is a hard day for me as my Nan and I were always very close, but also because we were hoping that she may be here for the birth of my first child at the end of February 2008.

Her Funeral will be held here in Sydney next week and we will all be there to pay tribute to this wonderful lady who for me in particular was a major influence and crucial part of my life who I will miss very dearly but will also remember for ever,

Nan had become quite ill towards the end, by the time she moved from Broughton in 2004 when grandad (Walter) died, her mind had started to wander and it was difficult for us, but in very recent times her health deteriorated quite rapidly and we unfortunately knew that this time was approaching.

For me the most important thing is that Nan came to live here in 2004 and that I got to spend another 3 years her having left 13 years after we left the village in 1993.

In closing I hope that all who remember will raise a scotch & dry to a beautiful, wonderful old "GIT" that ever graced this fair planet and insulted us all in a way never to be forgotten.

Thank you and all the best to you all.

Steve Eaton and Family.

Comment Hi,
Can anyone help me? Whilst researching my family history I found that my G.G. Grandfather, Job LYON was the publican at The White Horse Inn, Church St. Broughton for about 30yrs. (listed on 1901 Census).

I understand the pub no longer exists - does anybody know anything about the pub or the family?

Are there any old photos??

Comment Greetings
Hi, I was looking at the website and saw some familiar names.
I remember Steven Eaton being born! Hello to Trish and Toc. Tracie is a family friend. love to all.

The most interesting one though was from Trudie Butt.
I used to live at no. 90 Northampton road next door to her grandmother, until I was 8, when we moved to Cransley Hill.
I remember playing with Trudie and her sister, who I think was called Lesley! when they used to come and visit, with my sisters Debbie and Lesley. Mrs Butt was a lovely lady who often used to look after us when mum was at work. I used to visit her and Mr Butt at the flats and she was always pleased to see me and my 2 then small children Donna and Jamie. I think my mum Jeanne became her home help for a while too.

On another note, just to let everyone know, The Donna Sharp memorial fund has our annual summer fair on Sunday 1st July at the village hall. It starts at 2pm. Hope to see lots of people there! x x

Comment Greetings
I moved from Broughton in 1993 when I was 11 years old. I'm now living in Sydney Australia, but often look at your web site to see the latest, it's so strange to see that it remains the same and has for 14 years.
I've been back twice in that time and if airfares weren't so expensive from here I'd be there more often, Broughton is a big part of me and it always will be. (Hope the Red Lion still has John Smiths on draught!!)

Cheerio.

Comment Ki Ora,
Greetings from New Zealand.
I am working on my husbands family tree and most of his family were either born in Broughton or Kettering. I would appreciate any information on James Thompson Robinson born 1819 married Ann Hight. I have a great deal of info on Ann but James brothers and sisters and parents have been difficult to find. James and Anne emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 following their children who had emigrated earlier. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have enjoyed browsing through your site.

I moved to Manor Farm House in Broughton last August and wondered if any one had any photos or information on the farm, the house and the people who have lived here over the years. Parts of the house apparently date from 1701 so I am very interested in finding out more about it's history.
I really enjoyed the village website especially the photographs and I am now bracing myself for the Tin Can Band in a few weeks.

I 'came across' your village website whilst researching my family tree. My father was evacuated to Broughton at the outbreak of the 2nd world war, and when the bombing started in London, his parents - my grandparents - came to join him, and never moved back!!!

Originally they lived on Northampton Road, but as they became older and more infirm they moved to a small flat at St Andrews Court, where my grandfather passed away in 1979, and where my grandmother continued to live until her death in 1988.

I was just browsing your website and clicked on the 'Over 60's outing' photographs and low and behold there is one of my grandmother Both my grandfather Edward Butt) and great grandfather George Mills) are buried in the churchyard at St Andrews, my grandmother asked to be cremated at Kettering as there were then no family living with 50 miles to keep the
graves tidy, and she didn't like the thought of laying in an untended grave.

Unfortunately I get to the village very rarely even these days, and haven't visited the church for over 10 years. I also looked at some of the other pictures that are there, and some of the ones for the 'George & Mary 1935' feature lorries belonging to 'L.Riches - Haulage Contractor'.

Len Riches was the man that my father and his cousin Ken were billeted with when they were evacuated, and as a councillor, I am told, that Mr Riches was able to get my
grandparents the council house at 88 Northampton Road that they lived in for many years when they left London during the war.

Although I have never lived in Broughton myself, I do have many fond memories of the village: I remember sitting on the steps outside the Red Lion with a coke and a packet of crisps on an early Saturday evening whilst my Dad had a 'quick half' after he'd refereed a football match locally, and we'd been in to tea with my grandparents.

I also remember being taken to the working men's club on a Sunday lunchtime, and not being allowed in on a Saturday night whilst bingo was being played. I remember going 'conkering' on the green that was between the back of St Andrews Court and the working men's club, and walking up to the shops with my grandmother when we stayed with them during the day in the holidays.

For any of the older residents of the village who may remember them, my grandparents were Edie and Edward Butt, and my father was their only son Derek.

Comment Hello Elaine

I haven't been in touch for a while but I still often look at your site to see what is happening in Broughton. I sent some information quite a while ago about the Essam's who lived in Broughton who are on my direct line and I thought that you and some of the residents of Broughton may be interested in a website that I have set up for the Essam Family History.

The website features information given to me at the book launch for the 'Broughton Pictorial' with regard to Netta Essam (My great, great Aunt) who ran the Post Office after her father John Essam (My gt, gt grandfather). There are a lot of other connections to Broughton too.

The entire family tree, as I have found it so far, is on the site (minus any names of those still living) and several Essam's of Broughton who are all related.

The site is www.freewebs.com/essamfamily   Have a look and see what you think.

I hope this is useful to any Essam's still living in the village or anyone tracing their family in the Broughton.

Very best wishes

Karen Bland

Comment Just found your website - very professional.  I have lived in
Broughton since 1987.  Firstly in Cox's Lane next door to the Sun, then
moving to Lenton Close when my marriage split up.  Two years ago my
daughter and I moved to 22 Northampton Road which I am slowly doing up.  Does anyone have any old pictures or know any history of the property??   I would be very interested to hear from you.

Also, I am treasurer of the Broughton Playing Field and Village Hall
Association and we would really appreciate some practical help from anyone willing and available to help with maintenance and repairs.  For too many years all this has been undertaken by a handful of people who have long since become pensioners!!

Look forward to hearing from you.

Comment My father's family lived in Broughton from the 1780's to 1913 and there is still a member of the family, a distant relative of mine, living in Glebe Avenue. I believe) My great grandfather, James (born in the village in 1856) moved to St Pancras in about 1882, following his older brother Joseph Sumpter Sail (Sale) who had got a job on the LMS railway.

Their mother Mary Ann Sale died in 1913 and is buried in the cemetery; she
was 86 and had been born in Kettering in 1828 as Mary Ann Sumpter the daughter of John, a mason.  I would dearly love to hear from anyone who has any record/knowledge of the Sale family and their time in Broughton. I appreciate that there can be no one alive who met Mary Ann but wonder whether any relatives had any knowledge.

I would also be interested to know whether there are any
Sail/Sale entries in the parish registers after the 1890's. I believe my
family lived in Bakehouse Lane which I gather does not exist now. Does any
one have an old map (1900) of the village?

Comment Just a quick note to congratulate Elaine on the website it is very easy to get around and read. We (the Jacques family)originally come from Cransley and I have traced the family back to 1769 although I have only found Matthew Jacques and his wife Sarah in Cransley back in the 1800's - there graves are in the churchyard at Cransley.  Matthew, I beleive was the local Game Keeper. Any information anybody can tell me about my family would be greatly
appreciated.

Comment Hi Elaine,

I am really impressed.  Some time ago I signed your guest book and told you then what a wonderful website you have and that is still true today.  However, what impresses me now is how easy one can get back to your website.   I did a search for "carl martin, humble, tx" using the new Google search engine and your site was 2nd on the returns.  The new search engine uses both  Google and   All the web.  I was just testing Google and you came up.  What I am impressed with is how Google hit on your site so fast.   Wow!  That must have cost thousands of dollars to tie in with Google like that.  :-)  Have a good day.   :-)   Carl Martin, Humble, Texas usa.
