Comment Hi
I am currently live in Australia but my family and I are returning to England next year. We are thinking of settling somewhere in Northamptonshire and I was told Broughton is a nice place to live.  Northamptonshire looks beautiful and I am really looking forward to having a look around on my return to the UK

Comment: Hello,
Congratulations on an excellent website.  I am originally from Kettering, having left that fair town in 1954 when my parents moved away from the area.  However, my great-great-great paternal grandfather, Thomas Wood, 'migrated' to Broughton, sometime before 1800, from Little Oakley.  In the 1851 census my ggg grandad, aged 75, was desgnated'brewer' in Broughton. It is thought that he brewed his own beer under the 1831 Beer Act, this assumption was arrived at following research into the five licensed establishments in the village at that time, with the help of the Brewery History Society.

My great-great grandfather, James Wood, lived all of his life in the village and was an agricultural labourer, his wife, Mary Jacquest, was a lace maker and perhaps of Hugenoet origins. My great grandfather was also born in Broughton and was originally an agricultural labourer, but sometime after 1830 he became a stone mason, according to various census and other records.  My grandfather, Thomas James, was also born in Broughton in 1871, but moved to Kettering before 1880.

I do have various addresses for the foregoing of my Broughton ancestors, should anyone be interested.

Comment: I Am an American who had served with the US Army at Molesworth fifty years ago. It was only several days I had stayed at the Kettering Park Hotel and visited some of the sights I neglected to when I was there last time. I did have one disappointment during my stay, it was a bank holiday and the museum was closed. I had hoped to research Molesworth RAF Station and see if i could obtain any material on the subject. I may return next year for the Queens Jubilee seeing as how I was there for her Coronation.

Comment: Hi, just wanted to point out that there is no mention of the lollypop ladies/men in Broughton. My Mum (Val Loasby) was lollpop lady there for years! Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of this! We lived in Broughton from about 1977 until 1991. Would like to see more pictures and information throughout all decades. It seems to be either very old archive or present day. It was nice to see the Donna Sharp Memorial Fund mentioned here. I have been friends with her family for years, and used to babysit her as a child. I don't miss the din of the 'tin can band' it was well spooky when you were awoken as a kid! Would like to hear from anyone who remembers us!

Well Tracie I am trying with the pictures but I could do with some help from the locals,  Pictures and stories always welcome....

Comment: I was directed to your site by Fred Knippel..what a wonderful job you have done !!
I am from Kettering originally but worked in Broughton at Lance Sales and Marketing next to the village shop, which then moved to the Market Place, Kettering.
My daughter Sharon (Clipstone) lives in the village and her son Daniel goes to the village school, she also has a daughter, Leanne...who is 3 years old, her husband Daniel, is a manager at Hitech Motors in Kettering ...Sharon works part time as a dental assistant in Northampton Road Kettering.

Another resident who is a dear friend of mine is Stan Thompson, I worked with Stan at the ET and I know he worked tirelessly for the Broughton Bypass having lost one of his sons to the speeding traffic through Broughton, what a great character and full of historic information regarding Broughton. He told me some wonderful stories of his days as a young kid in the village, his Dad
kept one of the pubs I believe.

I now live in Brunswick, South East Georgia in the USA, but came home last year and stayed with Sharon's family. Another dear friend of mine is Tracey Pollard....you can see I love characters, and Tracey is most definitely a character..I love her to death.
Good luck on your excellent site....

PS the opening page looks straight at my old office...quite took my breath
away....

Comment: My husband and myself came to Broughton a couple of years ago, as I started my mothers family history and found that my Grandmother's family came from Broughton. One of her brothers is on your War memorial, his name was John Coleman, but my mother always called him Jack.My G.Grandmother was Mary Ann Andrews and she married George Coleman. My G Grandmother died at the age of 38years and my G. Grandfather remarried. That is as far as I have got with  this side of my mothers family as my own grandchildren came along and I spent less time on my family history for the time being .You have a beautiful village with a lovely church ,we hope to come back again soon.

Comment: I moved to Broughton when I was just three years old   with my parents  Horace and Mabel Wright. We moved into the flat  above the then co-op butchers  which was then opposite the co-op that is still in village, from there we moved up school hill to one of the little house that used to be behind nicholls old workshop, where they used to make the coffins  (it was a Mr Lawrence  from Northampton road who used to make)  we then moved across the road to the little  houses in the little cul de sack  just before the blacksmith ,, the balls also lived there ..

From there  we moved up to Northampton road  no84 where we lived until I went into the R.A.F  I  id 4 years then moved back to home  I   lived there until I got married  with my parents and brothers and sister ( Colin and Tony Gail )   my father died in 1982  and my mother died in 1986,   they were both very well known in Broughton as I was.        When my mother died, my wife and I decided to take on the house and we moved back to Broughton in 87 .. we stayed for 10 years  when we decided to move  back to Kettering where we now live ..  I really enjoyed my time  spent in the village   I hope this web site brings a lot of pleasure to a lot of people,   keep it going.   John

My Grandfather came from Broughton and his name was Essam. Have traced the name back to 1700's and have linked all Broughton Essam's with Loddington, Thorpe Malsor, Kettering, Wilbarston and Pipewell and have a huge Essam family tree. Would love to hear from Roy Essam and any other Essam's still in Broughton. certain we are related. Karen.
